Primer on Women's & Gender Critical Groups In & Around the Green Party
GREEN PARTY WOMEN (GPW)
The accredited Special Interest Group within the Green Party. As such it has to abide by the GPEW Constitution and the Code of Conduct. As an official SIG it is allocated a free stall at Conference and is entitled to representation on various Party bodies.
The GPW Committee is elected annually.
As with all SIGs, current Party rules state that membership must be open to all GPEW members.
GPW has its own constitution which states that only those who 'identify as women or gender variant' can vote or stand for office. A vote to change this to 'women' received majority support from members. However, it narrowly missed out on the 2/3rd majority requirement after Sian Berry and others in the Party ran a campaign against women having their own single-sex group.
For a number of years, transactivists have sought to undermine GPW by gaining seats on the Committee with the sole aim of hindering GPW activities. They have ruthlessly attacked fellow Committee members with complaints if they perceive them to be gender critical, resulting in suspensions and expulsions, including six co-chairs.
Currently the Committee are all gender critical.
GPW has an active Bookclub and Green Witchers birding & nature group, and campaigns on issues relevant to women and girls.
Membership is ~2,500 and from recent votes for Committee and constitutional matters, it is apparent that membership is 'majority sensible' on matters of sex and gender.
Members can join and sign up to receive newsletters, observe meetings, vote in committee elections, participate in Bookclub etc by emailing info@greenpartywomen.org.uk. Its website is here https://women.greenparty.org.uk/
Many past webinars can be viewed on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/@gpwcommittee5507.
GREEN WOMEN'S DECLARATION (GWD)
Set up by women in the Green Party to lobby for women's sex-based rights, along similar lines to the Labour Women's Declaration and Liberal Voice for Women.
GWD launched in August 2023 with 155 signatories to its Declaration, and now has 1600+.
In June 2025, it re-launched as a fully incorporated body, inviting supporters to join its membership scheme, in order to more effectively campaign, hold the Green Party to account and advocate for its members.
Its active working group consists of women in the Party plus many who have been suspended or expelled. It hosts frequent webinars, lobbies for the 8 Declaration points to be respected and adopted within the Party and advocates for members coming under attack for their gender critical beliefs.
Anyone, GPEW member or not, can sign the Declaration here https://www.ipetitions.com/petition/greenwomensdeclaration.
Sign up to the email list via the website here https://www.greenwomensdeclaration.uk/
And become a supporting member here https://www.greenwomensdeclaration.uk/join-us
The website contains links to recordings of all GWD webinars - a wonderful resource explaining GWD's campaigning work and the Party's woeful treatment of gender critical members.
GREEN FEMINISTS (GF)
Predates Green Women's Declaration.
GF is a large email list that serves to keep ordinary members of GPEW informed of events and issues within the Green Party of special interest to women. There is no discussion space within it. You can sign up to the list here https://facebook.us19.list-manage.com/subscribe?u=409cf838eaa33b3b4852ba616&id=0f633f2046
GF is also on Twitter @GreenFemsUK and Facebook here https://www.facebook.com/GreenFeminists
FEMINIST GREENS (FG)
This is also an accredited Special Interest Group within the Green Party.
FG was set up by transactivists on the GPW Committee who were frustrated that they could not control the Committee from their minority position.
Its pledge against transphobia breaks both Green Party rules and the law, to exclude anyone suspected of being gender critical.
It has a Constitution which enables representation of many different gender identities on its committee, as a result of which many positions remain unfilled.
FG does very little, other than use its status in the Party to gain access to power and attempt to thwart Green Party Women's influence.
LESBIAN GREENS (LG)
Launched in Lesbian Visibility Week 2024.
LG is currently not an official group within the Party but has a website here https://lesbiangreens.uk/ and very active Twitter @LesbianGreens and Facebook here https://tinyurl.com/p6yps5zz
LG knows that lesbians are biological women who are same-sex attracted, and lobbies for such, as well as promoting positive representation and celebration of lesbians and lesbian community within and outside environmental movements.
GENDER CRITICAL GREENS (GCG)
GCG is a loose network with a long-standing presence in the Green Party. It was set up in 2016 by members challenging the transactivist and anti-child-safeguarding influence of the Challenors and as a vehicle for this piece of writing here https://gendercriticalgreens.wordpress.com/2016/08/15/a-feminist-view-of-gender-identity-politics/. The network now includes women and men in and outside the Party who know that sex matters. Some run a website here https://gcgreens.uk/. Some a twitter account @gencritgreen. There have been a significant number of men who have raised their heads above the parapet in GPEW to support women's sex-based rights and child safeguarding, and often suffered for it.
GREENS IN EXILE (GIE)
GIE was set up in 2024, as it became apparent that the purge of gender critical members had reached epic proportions and that Party members needed to know about the corruption of governance and disciplinary matters that was enabling this political purge. Not all Exiles have been sanctioned for gender critical beliefs but all agree that the resultant corruption needs overturning.
The first major action undertaken by GIE was a presence outside Autumn 2024 conference in Manchester which created quite a stir.
Its website here https://greensinexile.org.uk/ is a mine of information - on the injustices perpetrated on the Exiles themselves, on governance processes in the Party, current members of governing bodies and a useful Diary of Dates
CONCERNED GREENS (CG)
CG has a website here https://concernedgreens.uk/ which attempts to alert Party members to governance problems, and digs the dirt on those responsible for the injustices, corruption of process and resulting unlawful actions of GPEW.
