From Declaration to Action: What's Next for GWD?
Green Women’s Declaration recently celebrated the UK Supreme Court unanimous ruling that "sex" in the Equality Act means biological sex. This wasn't a narrow victory - it was a complete vindication of everything the Green Women's Declaration has been saying for years.
But here's what happened next.
Instead of aligning with the law, GPEW have doubled down. On May 3rd - just weeks after the Supreme Court ruling - they published election regulations that directly contradict UK law. Their rules still require leadership positions to be held by people of "different, self-determined genders”.
We wrote to the Green Party Executive warning them of the legal risks. We explained that their rules expose the party to direct sex discrimination claims. We pointed out that two biological males could now share leadership positions simply by one identifying as a different gender - completely undermining women's representation.
Their response? Silence.
With nominations for the leadership opening earlier this week, they're pushing ahead with legally questionable elections that could face court challenges.
They're gambling with the party's future rather than accepting biological reality.
After years of being told to stay quiet, of watching women's rights eroded within our own party, of seeing science sacrificed for ideology, the highest court in the land has confirmed we were right all along.
The question is now: what do we do with this victory?
The Green Women's Declaration has grown from a brave statement with 155 founding signatories to a movement of over 1,600. We've gone from whispered conversations to press releases that make national news; from isolated voices to organised opposition.
Now we're at a crossroads. We can celebrate this Supreme Court judgment and hope things change by themselves. Or we can recognise that victory means nothing without the power to enforce it.
The Green Party leadership is betting that we'll stay quiet. They're counting on our politeness, our loyalty, our reluctance to rock the boat.
They're about to discover how wrong they are.
Over the past few months, we’ve been organising. We've been building something powerful, something that will give our movement the structure and resources it needs to turn legal victory into political reality.
