Stand, Support, Vote!
Nominations for the Green Party internal elections open
While the Green Party has 60,000 members, last time only about 5,000 voted - 8 per cent of the membership - which is not indicative of a healthy, functioning internal democracy. Such a small turnout allows minorities to have a disproportionate influence on the outcome and leaves most members uninformed and passive.
A strong Green Party matters for all of us, whether we are members or not. It is the only UK political party set up to protect the planet and the people on it. It is needed now more than ever. With four MPs, the GPEW will come under greater media scrutiny and must be confident that its governing bodies are open, transparent and democratic.
Of course, if you don't know the candidates and the issues, not voting is a sensible course of action, but GWD is here to keep you informed and answer your questions. Let's improve the turnout and get the best candidates elected for all the posts.
Due for election this year are:
Leadership Team
Either one Leader and two Deputies
Or two Co-Leaders and one Deputy
The Leader/s will be elected first and then the deputy/ies.
Green Party National Executive
GPEx is the body responsible for the day-to-day running of the Green Party, employing staff, making sure that GPEW abides by the law and keeping the party finances in order.
It consists of 13 Co-Ordinators, plus a Chair, all elected by the national membership to serve for two years - half elected every year. The elections fell out of step, so this year the whole of the Executive is being elected - some for one year and some for two.
GPEx Co-ordinators to be Elected for a One-Year Term
GPEx Co-ordinators to be Elected for a Two-Year Term
Policy Development Committee (5 positions)
Nominations opened today, 2 June, and will close at midday on 30 June.
