GWD Joins Cross-Party Call on Single-Sex Services Guidance

Last week we were proud to be a co-signatory of a cross-party letter to the Prime Minister, alongside Sex Matters, For Women Scotland, Labour Women’s Declaration, Liberal Voice for Women, Conservatives for Women and many other organisations.

With the first anniversary of the Supreme Court ruling approaching, the letter calls on the government to stop stalling and publish the EHRC’s updated guidance on single-sex services.

The law is clear. It’s time to get on with it.

The Supreme Court’s ruling was unambiguous. Sex in the Equality Act means biological sex. Yet nearly a year on, women and service providers are still waiting for the practical guidance they need to implement the law with confidence.

This is not a party-political issue. The breadth of the coalition behind this letter — spanning Green, Labour, Liberal Democrat and Conservative women’s organisations — demonstrates that the demand for clarity crosses every political boundary.

Women’s organisations, refuges, sports bodies and public services need to know where they stand. Delay is not neutrality. Delay is a failure to protect the rights the highest court in the land has confirmed.

We will continue to work with allies across the political spectrum to ensure that the law is not just upheld in principle, but implemented in practice.
