Lesbian Visibility Week
Lesbian Visibility Week shines a light on the voices, rights, and resilience of lesbians across the UK and beyond, we at the Green Women’s Declaration want to take this moment to celebrate, reflect, and issue a call to action.
Lesbians face unique challenges within society, within political movements, and yes, within our own Party. The erosion of sex-based rights has disproportionately affected lesbians, whose very definition relies on the recognition of biological sex. That’s why we must highlight a critical and recent victory for our community.
Lesbian Intervention in the Supreme Court Ruling
We draw your attention to the pivotal role lesbians played in securing last week’s landmark Supreme Court ruling. The Lesbian Interveners were clear, in a phrase subsequently repeated by the Supreme Court judges, that “lesbians are not attracted to certificates”. This ruling is a turning point for women’s rights, and especially for lesbians, whose right to define themselves based on same-sex attraction has been under sustained attack.
Sally Wainright and the GWD Webinar
A special thanks goes to Sally Wainwright, whose dedication and advocacy helped bring this issue to national attention. Her work, and that of the Lesbian Interveners (the LGB Alliance, Scottish Lesbians and The Lesbian Project), alongside organisations like Sex Matters, ensured that lesbian voices were heard at the highest judicial level. We encourage all members to amplify this achievement by supporting related tweets, sharing news articles, and engaging in public discourse to safeguard lesbian rights.

📢 “Lesbian rights are women’s rights—and they depend on the recognition of sex. This ruling is not just legal clarity; it’s a lifeline for lesbian identity and freedom of association.”
Connect and Support Lesbian Greens
Now, more than ever, we urge lesbians within the Green Party—and allies—to come forward, connect, and stand together. The climate within the Party has too often been hostile to those advocating for sex-based rights, leaving many isolated or silenced. We are determined to change that.
