Why this motion matters: We are delighted to see that this motion has been proposed for Green Party Conference. It seeks to establish a new "Women's Rights" section in the Rights and Responsibilities chapter of the Policies for a Sustainable Society, directly responding to the Supreme Court judgment in FWS v Scottish Ministers (April 2025).This motion will ensure the Green Party recognises that:
Women and girls face discrimination based on their sex, which is a protected characteristic separate from gender reassignment
Single-sex services, spaces and provisions are lawful, necessary and proportionate
Women have the right to female-only spaces including changing rooms, healthcare settings, refuges, and services for survivors of male violence
Women and girls have the right to organise themselves as a sex and to discuss policies affecting them without harassment
Lesbians are women who are same-sex attracted and have the right to organise based on this definition
The motion also affirms that pregnancy, childbirth and maternity are sex-specific experiences requiring specific protections, and commits the party to opposing any erosion of women's sex-based rights.
Time is running out - please co-propose today if you can, and share this with other Green Party members immediately.
This represents a crucial opportunity to ensure the Green Party's policies reflect both the law and the reality of women's lived experiences.
Thank you for your urgent support.
In solidarity,
Green Women's Declaration
P.S. If you are not currently a Green Party member, you can join NOW and will then be eligible to co-propose this motion.
