Spiked: GWD’s Legal Action in the Wider Context

Spiked published a piece by journalist Jo Bartosch on International Women’s Day, placing GWD’s legal action in the wider context of the Green Party’s direction under its current leadership.

The article examines how the Party’s position on sex and gender has developed over recent years, and what our legal challenge represents for women who refuse to accept that their rights are negotiable.

It is significant that this piece was published on International Women’s Day. That date is supposed to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. Yet within the Green Party, women who speak up for sex-based rights are treated not as people to be celebrated, but as problems to be managed.

The coverage in Spiked reaches a readership that cares deeply about free speech, open debate and the defence of fundamental rights. These are values that should sit at the heart of any democratic political party. The fact that we are having to fight for them within the Green Party tells its own story.
